Umbria
Umbria is a region of central Italy located in the heart of the peninsula, historically the land inhabited in ancient times by the Umbrians, from which it takes its name.
The Regional County Seat is Perugia while the provinces are those of Perugia and Terni with the major centers represented by Foligno, Città di Castello, Umbertide, Spoleto, Gubbio, Gualdo Tadino, Assisi, Bastia Umbra, Orvieto, Amelia, Narni, Marsciano, Spello and Todi.
It is characterized by a succession of lush woods and large valleys designed by rivers, lakes, waterfalls and hills: Lake Trasimeno, Mount Subasio, the Sibillini mountains (shared with the Marche), the Valnerina, the Marmore Waterfall, the Lake of Piediluco, the Nera river, are the perfect places to practice outdoor activities of different difficulties such as trekking through suggestive paths, bike tours, horseback riding, rafting, canyoning, caving.
Nature is also the setting for medieval villages and castles, where ancient traditions are still handed down through important historical re-enactments such as, for example, the Corsa all’Anello in Narni, the Giostra dell’Arme in San Gemini, the Festa dei Ceri in Gubbio, the Giostra della Quintana in Foligno, AD168 in Otricoli, the Palio dei Colombi in Amelia and many others.
These events, some also known internationally, bring together tourists from all over the world in the region. Folklore is the key to know the history handed down by popular memory and this past is expressed today also with events, exhibitions, theatrical performances, festivals and musical performances.
Small or large cultural events take place throughout the year, ranging from music to theater. Some of them take on national and international significance such as the Festival dei Due Mondi in Spoleto, Umbria Jazz Festival in Perugia and Trasimeno Blues Festival which takes place in various places around Trasimeno lake.
Finally, to fully appreciate Umbria, you just have to taste its delicious food: extra virgin olive oil, truffles, its wines and the recipes of the past.
