SCHOOLS DAY
Schools participate in EuFestTSG – Perugia, 2022, September, 27th

The European Traditional Sports and Games Festival Project (EuFestTSG) is an initiative of the Italian Federation of Traditional Games and Sports (F.I.G. and S.T.) to encourage participation in sport and physical activities which are the indispensable prerequisite for a healthy lifestyle and for a active population.

The promotion of physical activity has been under the attention of the EU for many years both for the tasks assigned to it by the Treaties in the fields of sport and health, and in response to the World Health Organization (WHO) which considers physical activity important for all age groups, with particular relevance for children, the active population and the elderly, and recommends regular sporting activity and constant physical exercise.

Physical inactivity, a sedentary lifestyle and an unhealthy diet are an important problem for European society as they produce negative effects on the health and well-being of citizens with serious consequences on the economy and health systems. The WHO European Report on Obesity, released on May 3, 2022 by the Regional Office for Europe, reveals that overweight and obesity rates have reached epidemic proportions across the region and that no state in Europe is on track to stop its increase by 2025. The report reveals that in Europe 59% of adults and nearly 1 in 3 children (29% of boys and 27% of girls) are overweight or live in obesity and that these rates they are the cause of over 1.2 million deaths a year, corresponding to over 13% of total mortality in the Region.

FIGeST promotes Traditional Games and Sports, recognizing them as “historical memory, European heritage, wealth to be supported and valued as a treasure of human and social values”. Their peculiar characteristic directly connected to the popular tradition of a specific territory gives these sports and activities a fundamental and relevant function of representing the rich historical and cultural heritage of Europe. Furthermore, they are based on shared and recognized absolute principles and values within a universal dimension. All European citizens, without any discrimination or limitation, can participate and take part in it and for this reason they are an efficient and effective instrument of social inclusion, respect, solidarity, tolerance, understanding and friendship. These sports have a natural educational and training power to be transmitted to the new generations by directing them towards the positive principles of sport, the benefits of physical activity and greater attention to psycho-physical well-being and quality of life.

Therefore, schools rise as co-protagonists partners on the stage of this important European Festival of Sports and Traditional Games, testifying to the essential value of movement, aggregation and healthy fun in psycho-physical development in school age and in particularly in overcoming the negative effects of the containment measures of the SARS-COVID-19 pandemic.

On 27 September 2022, in Perugia, in the heart of Italy, a day entirely dedicated to schools is scheduled as part of the rich program of the Festival. Students of all ages together with their teachers will have the opportunity to freely try all the traditional sports and games present and promoted and to meet the international guest delegations with which to deepen the priority themes of the project, knowledge of sports and games in representation of the history and culture of the majority of European countries and beyond and participate in exciting demonstration moments, stories of experiences and exchanges of good practices. During the scheduled events, gadgets and information and promotional materials of the project will be distributed.

School and Sport are an inseparable pair, practicing sport promotes physical and psychological well-being and doing so in an international, multicultural and multidisciplinary, aggregative and inclusive context, also becomes instructive. Sport and physical activity train body and mind, teach loyalty and friendship, they also help to overcome daily difficulties: in this children can understand that sport is first and foremost a vehicle for union between people, for promoting inclusion and equal opportunities to break down inequalities and prejudices.
